Certification Program

Make your job your joy with the power of nature

YOU are a therapist, teacher or other professional who understands that time outside is important for your clients. Maybe you have read something or just intuitively know it makes people healthier and happier but you want a solid understanding of why and how?

YOU are a teacher and have been taking your class outside because it’s easier, especially in the pandemic.

YOU are an occupational therapist who like I was, is frustrated with feeling like you can only be partially effective with an indoor-only model of service delivery. Do you often wonder, “Is this really meaningful?”

YOU have been working as a nature connection program director or mentor and, along with your peers have noticed an alarming uptick in challenging behaviors among students. Or perhaps you are just ready to dive deeper into, “Why this stuff works.”—So you can more effectively speak to your community about the value of what you do.

The Nature Led Approach helps children and the adults who love them thrive

I created the Way of the Nature Led Practitioner Certification Program for YOU! In my writing community there is a saying, “Write what you know.” That is also how I practice in my professional life.

The Certification Program is a direct result of spending many years with one foot in two worlds— the world of therapeutic intervention/human development, and the world of nature connection. Seventeen years ago while in deep meditation I heard a voice say to me, “Become the bridge.” The Nature Led Approach is my answer to that voice.

How does the Certification Program Work?
  • The NLAC is a 10-month program
  • We begin and end with an in-person 5-night workshop.
  • The months between the workshops are distance – online.
  • There are weekly lessons – these are designed to help you integrate the material while enhancing your current work/home life and not overburden or overwhelm you with “busywork.”
  • There is a once a month live online 3-hour class.
  • There are bimonthly live Q&A calls. (optional attendance)
  • Each participant completes a culminating project to reflect their understanding of the Nature Led Approach. This will be specific to each person’s individual goal. It may be as simple as a flyer for a parent information night and the content of the information that will be given, or as elaborate as a program design.
What do we do in the workshop?
  • Participants are introduced to the theory, foundation and basic tenets of the Nature Led Approach.
  • Participants practice a variety of core routines from the Nature Led Model.
  • Participants have 1:1 time with Kathleen. During that time, she helps them define their short and long term goals and identify a potential culminating project (don’t worry, this is all fun)
What is included in the cost of the Certification?
  • Both in-person workshops and the distance mentorship/course.
  • Camping plus four lunches and four dinners, coffee and tea, during the first workshop. Camping during the second workshop (food provided for the second workshop for an additional fee)
  • A workbook and resource guides.
  • Twenty five years of hard earned experience and insight.
  • For the in person workshops, there are a very limited number of upgraded accommodations onsite for an additional fee. The workshops are held near beautiful destination locations and participants are welcome to stay in nearby lodging at their own additional expense. We provide a list of alternate options.
  • Connection with a community of other Nature Led Practitioners.
  • Upon satisfactory completion of the program, you can be listed on the RxOutside website as a Certified Practitioner. WebPage Coming Soon
What is the cost of the Certification?

  • Early bird price is $3548.00 – Ends four months prior to program start date.
  • Payments can be made in 1, 3 or 6 payments.
  • Financial assistance – please contact [email protected]
  • Group rates – 2-3 signing up together receive a 10% discount.
  • Group rates – for 4 or more signing up together or for an organizational rate please contact [email protected]
Do I need to be working with children or have an outdoor program?
  • The foundation of the Nature Led Approach focuses on child/human development and nature connection, which, ultimately applies to every age. One of the primary goals of the Certification program is to demonstrate that healing from “Nature Deficit Disorder*” is about rebuilding a relationship between the human neurological system and nature. That relationship is not left at the edge of the woods. It is transferable across all settings. *not a true disorder but a term by author Richard Louv to discuss a pervasive set of problems plaguing childhood.
Is this a forest kindergarten training?
  • Not specifically. Although we discuss different models of programs, service delivery, and program design, it is a much broader training. If you plan to open a forest kinder program, this is extremely relevant to you.
What is your refund policy?
  • If you change your mind up to one month prior to the program start date you receive a full refund, less a $100 administration fee.
  • If you change your mind less than one month prior to the program start date you receive a full refund less a $350 fee. A $100 administration fee plus a $250 fee is because we pay non-refundable deposits and commit to invoices for our location and our chef in advance based on our numbers.
  • If you are unable to begin the program on our start date for reasons beyond your control— pandemic, illness, tragedy, death, etc., and wish to move your participation to the next cohort dates, there is no additional fee.
  • If it is less than one month prior to the program start date and you are unable to come for reasons beyond your control— pandemic, illness, tragedy, death, etc., and you choose to withdraw completely, you will receive a full refund. In some cases we may have to charge a fee of no more than $250. Depending on the circumstances if we are able to recover our fees, we will return the full amount.
  • Although it hasn’t happened before, if after the program begins you are dissatisfied with the program and wish to discontinue, we ask that you commit to first communicating with Kathleen to find resolve. Kathleen is known to be very approachable and compassionate. If after attempting to resolve the issue with Kathleen a mutual resolution isn’t possible, you will receive a prorated refund. No more than half the cost of tuition will be refunded.
